The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) continues to face possible irrelevance as a result of underfunding. This is best illustrated by the situation faced by the South African Air Force (SAAF), which has only 250 flying hours per year of funding for its entire fighter squadron in 2011 and 2012, compared with the 240-300 hours per year that individual pilots flew previously. The SAAF's BAE Systems Hawk lead-in fighter trainers also now only have 2,000 hours against the 4,000 hours planned.
