The majority of armies deploy self-propelled (SP) mortars to provide an indirect fire capability to their mechanised units. These SP mortar systems are normally operated by the infantry, although in some cases - such as within the Canadian and French militaries - mortars now come under the operational control of the artillery, who have access to a much wider range of target acquisition systems.rnTraditionally, mortars have been deployed in the rear of armoured personnel carriers (APCs) and fired through open hatch covers. Some of these mortars are mounted on a turntable so that they can be rapidly traversed through a full 360 degrees and laid onto a new target, while others only have limited traverse, usually over the rear arc.
