The United States on 31 August formally ceased combat operations in Iraq after more than seven years, against the backdrop of a political crisis and the continued threat of sectarian insurgency that threaten to derail hard-won security gains in the country.rnIn a surprise visit to Ramadi in the continually restive Anbar province, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that while the US presence has represented an accomplishment that was "quite extraordinary ... how it all weighs in the balance over time, I think, remains to be seen".rnHis remarks acknowledged the ongoing controversy about the 2003 invasion to oust Saddam Hussein based on the ultimately discredited presence of weapons of mass destruction in the country.
