摘要

The South African government continues to view the defence industry as a strategic national asset, according to Deputy Defence Minister Thabang Makwetla.rnSpeaking in late October at a leadership symposium of the state-owned Denel group, Makwetla pointed out that, apart from supporting the military, the defence industry contributed seven per cent of the country's manufacturing output and two per cent of employment in 2009, as well as exporting goods worth about ZAR5 billion (USD730 million) annually.rnHe warned, however, that industry must "continuously re-invent itself to survive in a dynamic environment" and "do more with less".
