The late October announcement by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) of a decades-worth of arms transfers to Saudi Arabia worth some USD60 billion would, if fully realised, see the kingdom dramatically enhance its capability as the Gulf's foremost military power.rnThe proposed sales of aircraft and advanced equipment- some of which have yet to enter service with the US - lie within the context of the US government's policy of enhancing the defensive and offensive capabilities of its regional allies to temper the increasingly bellicose influence of Iran. Saudi Arabia's role in containing rebels along its southern border with Yemen also figures prominently within this strategy.
