Media reports of casualties sustained in armed conflicts are increasing pressure on military organisations to provide optimum protection for their troops on the ground. This challenge has been compounded by the changing nature of modern warfare, with hostile forces operating in localised cells when engaging with coalition troops. Increasingly, we are seeing applications of satellite communications employed to assist militaries in adapting to these evolving challenges. There is a recognition that providing protection to troops on the ground must extend to a full understanding of their deployed environment and the provision of a comprehensive and reliable communications system, connecting troops both to each other and to command-and-control centres.
