The US Air Force (USAF) is on the cusp of a "significant reduction in force levels" with its fighter fleet being highly vulnerable to cuts, according to a new study sponsored by the Air Force Association (AFA).rnThe study, released on 10 November, says the USAF is facing "a serious existential dilemma" because growing pressure on the federal budget may force it to cut funding for some combat forces that perform core missions.rnAccording to the analysis, the money spent on USAF combat forces is already considerably less than what is spent on other expenses. It says that if the USAF retired all of its combat forces -defined in the study as fighters, bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) - it would only save 25 per cent of its budget.
