Counter-insurgency in Afghanistan, Chinese muscle-flexing, North Korean bellicosity and Indian procurement foul-ups; in 2010 Asia-Pacific augmented its reputation as the world's most eventful region. Stung by the possibility of defeat in 2009, the NATO-led International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) went back to counter-insurgency (COIN) basics in 2010. US President Barack Obama committed an extra 30,000 US troops as ISAF tried to regain the initiative in the nine-year-old conflict. As well as more foreign troops, ISAF made increasing the size of the Afghan National Army (ANA) a priority and pencilled in a handover date of 2014.
