Workers at BAE Systems' Woodford site in Cheshire began scrapping nine Nimrod MRA.4 maritime patrol aircraft on 9 December following the announcement in October by UK Prime Minister David Cameron that the aircraft would not bi accepted into Royal Air Force (RAF) service. The move puts an end to speculation that the aircraft, which have been built at a cost of more than GBP3.65 billion (USD5.73 billion), could be sold to a foreign air force or placed in long term storage.
