France laid the first building block of Europe's new Multinational Space-based Imaging System (MUSIS) on 30 November by awarding a contract worth EUR795 million (USD1.06 billion) to EADS Astrium. The contract covers the construction of two satellites that will start replacing the current generation of European military spacecraft at the end of 2016. The French Ministry of Defence said the two satellites would form the optical component of the next- generation MUSIS programme and serve as direct successors to the Helios observation satellites that France put into orbit between 1995 and 2009. The contract includes an option for a third satellite.
