Austal and Lockheed Martin have granted the US Navy two more weeks to discuss their bids for a split buy of the two Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) designs, Jane's learnt on 13 December.rnWith both Lockheed Martin's Freedom-class monohull and Aus-tal's Independence-class aluminium trimaran meeting the navy's requirements, and the rival bids being closely matched, admirals had been expected to make a final decision on the proposed acquisition of 10 of each type by 14 December.rnHowever, as the date approached a Lockheed Martin spokeswoman confirmed that the deadline had been extended in anticipation of congressional approval, declining to comment further. Austal USA's spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
