Four Hawker Beechcraft King Air 350 aircraft are being converted into intelligence, surveillance, targeting and reconnaissance (ISTAR) platforms for use by the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) in Afghanistan, Jane's has learned. The highly classified programme was begun in 2006 to provide advanced electro-optical and synthetic-aperture radar sensor coverage of the Afghan battlefields. In mid-December the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed the existence of the type - named the Shadow R.1 by the RAF - to Jane's after they were spotted on several UK airfields.
