The Slovak Ministry of Defence (MoD) selected the Alenia Aeronautica C-27J as the new medium transport aircraft lor the Slovak air force on 18 December. "At this point all we can say is that Alenia has been selected as the winner of the tender," a Slovak MoD statement said. The Slovak selection of the C-27J brings to end a tender launched in early August. Alenia competed against the EADS CASA C-295 and the Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules for the requirement. The new aircraft will replace Slovakia's existing fleets of obsolete Antonov An-24 and An-26 aircraft, which will reach the end of their service lives in 2010.
