The exhibition in Chile demonstrated the emphasis being put on control and defence of the littorals by Latin American countries, as Jose Higuera reports The sixth Exponaval exhibition, held from 2-5 December at Valparaiso in Chile, highlighted the growing interest of South American countries in reinforcing control of littoral and exclusive economic zones through the deployment of domestically built offshore patrol vessels (OPVs). The event, which attracted 6,000 visitors - including 30 official delegations from 24 nations as well as representatives from 126 companies across 96 countries - reportedly resulted in business contracts with a potential total value of USD500 million. US Navy Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead and Vice Admiral Maurizio Gemignani, commander, NATO Allied Maritime Component Command Naples, headed the biggest delegations, while Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, Commander-in-Chief Fleet of the UK Royal Navy (RN), also attended. The show's theme was underpinned by a series of conferences focusing on maritime security aspects such as global maritime domain awareness and assessments of emerging threats to shipping, such as piracy.
