The firing on g January of at least three 122 mm Katyusha rockets from south Lebanon into northern Israel was a widely anticipated reaction to the Israel Defence Force (IDF) offensive against Hamas in Gaza. Although it has raised concerns about a fresh front opening along Israel's northern border, the prospect of a renewed war between the IDF and Lebanon's militant Hiz-bullah organisation remains slim, as the militants have little interest in re-igniting hostilities with Israel. Currently in the process of a major re-armament, recruitment and training drive, Hizbullah is focused on knife-edge parlia- mentary elections expected in six months time.
