The Philippines' government announced on 7 January that it was willing to reopen talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) "without preconditions". President Gloria Macapa-gal-Arroyo's office said the administration was "ready to resume the stalled peace negotiations" with the MILF and to "move forward" in seeking a resolution to the long-running conflict, which is centred on the island of Mindanao.
