The Israel Defence Force (IDF) has initiated a new strategy of targeting Gaza's 'underground domain' during its three-week-old offensive against Hamas. The new tactics rely on real-time intelligence sharing that provides a full battlefield picture to the IDF's air, land and sea elements. More than 80 per cent of the militants' underground tunnel network, which stretches 8-16 m under Gaza's border with Egypt, has been destroyed since the first phase of Operation 'Cast Lead' began on 27 December, cutting off supplies of explosives and other smuggled items, according to IDF estimates.
