The path for the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to Join NATO could soon be open if talks with representatives from Greece In New York on 11 February prove successful. FYROM was expected to be invited into the alliance in 2008, along with Albania and Croatia, but at the annual summit in Bucharest last April NATO said the country's membership would be delayed until Greek objections to its name change - to 'Macedonia' - were resolved. Athens objects that accepting the name 'Macedonia' for FYROM might imply a territorial claim on the Greek region of the same name.
