The Karel Doorman-class frigate NRP Bartolomeu Dias (ex-HrMs Van Nes) was transferred to the Portuguese Navy in a ceremony at the Dutch naval base at Den Helder on 16 January. The transfer should have taken place last November, but the Portuguese Ministry of Defence (MoD) unexpectedly docked the ship and postponed the event, apparently in an effort to delay payment for the ship, according to sources at the time. However, Jane's now understands that problems were also experienced with the M-frigate's hull-mounted medium-frequency active search-and-attack sonar. Delivery of the second ship, NRP Dom Francisco de Almeida (ex-HrMs Van Galen), is scheduled to take place between November 2009 and January 2010.
