France is to begin reducing its troop levels in Africa because it no longer believes current manpower levels on the continent are necessary, Minister of Defence Henri Morin said on 21 January. In an interview with French radio station Europe 1, Morin indicated the drawdown would "probably" affect roughly 2,000 French personnel serving in Cote d'lvoire. Prime Minister Frangois Fillon is due to outline details of proposed changes in French deployments abroad to the French Parliament within the next few days. A spokesman for the French general staff told Jane's on 22 January that it was highly likely France would withdraw many of the 1,800 French personnel deployed as part of the 3,200-strong EUFOR operation in Chad and Central African Republic (CAR) as part of the international response to the crisis in Sudan's western Darfur region.
