US Army officials have started a new phase of test-firing for the Mounted Combat System's (MCS's) lightweight XM360 smoothbore gun, which has been integrated into a turret for the first time. At the time of writing, one shot had been fired on 14 January and a second on 21 January at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, to obtain performance data on the new gun. The 120 mm XM360 is the primary weapon for MCS, which is one of eight manned ground vehicles planned for the army's Future Combat Systems . (FCS) programme. Major Cliff Calhoun, assistant project manager for MCS, told reporters on 22 January at Aberdeen Proving Ground: "We're going to be able to shoot the same 120 mm ammunition that's currently in the army inventory, but we're going to be able to do it at a much lighter weight than the current force."
