UN peacekeepers in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will provide logistic and transport support to a joint military operation by DRC and Rwandan troops against Hutu extremists, amid widening endorsements of the offensive that rights campaigners and policy activists fear could provoke substantial civilian casualties. A spokesman for the UN mission told Jane's on 28 January that the primary responsibility of the 17,000 troops in MONUC would be to co-ordinate the demobilisation and disarmament of an estimated 6,500 extremists who have entrenched themselves in eastern DRC over the course of a decade, gathering adherents after fleeing Rwanda over their roles in that country's 1993-94 genocide.
