The manufacture of the first mission system-equipped Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) has been completed, the company announced on 23 January. The short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) F-35B variant left the company's Fort Worth facility tn Texas on 21 January and was sent to the fuel facility for functional fuel system checks. It is scheduled for delivery to the flight line by the end of the month and Its first flight is expected in mid-2009 following a comprehensive series of ground tests. The aircraft's mission systems enable it to detect, locate, identify, track and target adversaries from beyond visual range; detect fast-moving incoming threats such as missiles; and receive and transmit large amounts of battlespace information through secure datalinks.
