摘要

Georgia's breakaway region ot Abkhazia expects to sign a deal within the next few months to allow Russia to establish a naval base and an airbase on its territory, Kristtan Bzhania, spokesman for Abkhazian separatist leader Sergei Bagapsh, said on 29 January. Russia needs a base in the Black Sea as its lease of the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol expires in 2017 and Kiev has made clear it does not want to renew it. Following its conflict with Georgia in August, Russia signed two separate "treaties of mutual assistance" with Abkhazia and South Ossetia on 17 September. The accords enabled Russia to locate an air force base in Gudauta and a naval base in Otchamtchiri, as well as to allow for the presence of around 3,800 Russian armed forces troops in Abkhazia.
