摘要

Serbia is unlikely to seek full membership of NATO but is aiming to strengthen its partnership with the alliance through increased participation in international operations, Minister of Defence Dragan Sutanovac has told Jane's.rnSutanovac said Belgrade would aim to replicate the positions of Sweden and Austria by placing EU membership ahead of further integration with NATO.rnHowever, he said there are areas in which co-operation between NATO and Serbia can be strengthened, particularly regarding UNrnpeacekeeping missions. "I think Serbia should be a [stronger] partner with NATO, and the best way to be a partner is to be together, on UN operations for example. This is something which will be very important for us," he said.rnThe most recently published UN figures, for December 2008, show Serbia has 26 participants on UN operations: five police underrnMINUSTAH in Haiti; six troops under MONUC in the Democratic Republic of Congo; six police and six military observers in UNMIL in Liberia; and three military observers in Cote d'Ivoire.
