General David Petraeus, commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), visited Uzbekistan on 16-17 February and held talks with President Islam Karimov in a bid to secure the last link in a new NATO supply chain between Russia and Afghanistan.rnMeanwhile, on 20 February Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev signed into law a bill ordering the closure of the United States' airbase at Manas. The bill, which was passed by the Kyrgyz parliament the day before, could potentially hamper US efforts to deploy an additional 17,000 troops to Afghanistan during 2009. However, the US has 180 days (or until late August) in which to leave the base and this grace period could still allow Manas to play a significant role in the US' Afghan surge.
