Autonomy is a much-misused word when applied to the world of unmanned aircraft systems. There can be so-called 'autonomous' UAVs that can fly a simple reconnaissance profile by themselves once they are safely at altitude, but still require a small army of personnel to operate the mission systems and to safely get them airborne and recovered.rnBAE Systems' idea of autonomy is very different. The company's aim is to offer systems that can perform a fair proportion of the work done by humans, and to carry out those tasks with greater efficiency and better results.rnFor a start, BAE Systems' air vehicles are designed to launch and recover with complete autonomy once the basic mission parameters have been established. Onboard systems can direct the vehicle to taxi from its parking spot, through takeoff and climbout, perform the mission profile and then recover to a designated spot without human intervention other than the mouse-click that initiates the process.
