The HERTI (High Endurance Rapid Technology Insertion) utility UAV first flew in late 2004. Having developed an impressive autonomous capability with the Raven and Corax programmes, BAE Systems took the logical step of applying that technology to a low-cost vehicle that would have multiple applications in both military and civil security fields. An existing motor-glider type (the J&AS Aero Design J6 Fregata) was chosen as the platform, and a demonstrator was produced in just four months.rnTest missions were initially flown in Australia, but on 18 August 2005 a HERTI- 1A test vehicle undertook the first autonomous unmanned flight in the UK. Since then the type has been used for expanding trials, including participation in full-scale military exercises.rnBAE Systems subsequently started construction of a small batch of production-standard HERTI-1Bs with Rotax 914F engines. The HERTI is built to civilian standards, and is leading the drive in the UK for the certification of UAVs to operate in civil airspace.
