BAE Systems' AS&FC division is developing an unmanned airship platform, drawing on the autonomous systems and technologies developed for HERTI and other vehicles. The airship has a number of attributes that make it highly desirable for a number of civil security tasks, such as emergency and disaster management, and crowd monitoring/control at major events. In the military arena the unmanned airship offers potential in the key asset protection and communications relay roles. In these duties the platform does not need to move fast but has to remain on-station for many hours, and be capable of rapid re-deployment. It also needs to be cost-effective, both to acquire and to operate. An airship platform answers these requirements elegantly. As well as direct sales, BAE Systems is investigating a service provision business model for GA22, in which the company hiresrnout the system and the surveillance it provides.
