The top US military official in charge of the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme says the US and eight F-35 partner countries could save as much as USD13 billion if the Pentagon buys about 150 extra aircraft between 2010 and 2015. Major General Charles Davis, the head of the Pentagon's JSF Program Office, said the Obama administration is considering several F-35 funding proposals for the Fiscal Year 2010 (FY10) budget, which the White House is expected to release in late April, but that he favours aggressive funding early in the production cycle. "If you buy somewhere in the neighbourhood of 100 to 150 or so more airplanes early in the programme - between 2010 and 2015 - we calculate the savings to the services and the partners would be on average about USD13 billion across the programme," Gen Davis told Jane's on 18 March.
