Madgascar's armed forces have handed power to opposition leader Andry Rajoelina following the resignation of president Marc Ravalomanana, aiming to bring an end to two months of political crisis that have choked the Indian Ocean island's capital and caused the deaths of more than 100 people. Rajoelina, the 34-year-old former mayor of Antananarivo, was to be sworn in as president on 21 March despite a constitutional provision that sets the minimum age requirement for head of state at 40. Ravalomanana was forced from office after weeks of anti-government protests. He handed power to a military directorate of senior generals on 17 March; they subsequently turned the reins over to Rajoelina. Though the military did not assume power, the regime change has still been considered forcible, which prompted the African Union (AU) to announce on 20 March that it was suspending Madagascar from the regional body.
