Safran restated on 17 March its interest in buying the military and space propellant interests of France's state-owned SNPE (Societe Nationale des Poudres et Explosifs), but declined to say whether it would be willing to acquire the whole company and divest those assets that fall outside its sphere of interest. The comments follow reports carried by French newspaper La Tribune on 16 March stating that Paris would insist that Safran acquire the whole company -including military munitions lines and non-defence chemical segments - in order to gain the parts it covets. SNPE's industrial explosives and speciality chemical units account for the majority of its sales. Jane's reported in October that the French government was gearing up to sell the military businesses of state-owned energetics and chemicals group SNPE to other companies in which the state holds major stakes.
