Russia confirmed on 18 March that it has signed a contract to sell its advanced S-300 air defence system to Iran but has not begun deliveries, which has renewed international fears that Tehran's possession of these missiles could upset the regional balance of power. A high-ranking official of the Federal Service of Military-Technical Co-operation said the contract was concluded in 2007 and was "being fulfilled gradually", state media reported. "Further fulfilment of the contract will mainly depend on the current international situation and the decision of the country's leadership," the official said. Conflicting claims and counterclaims have been regular hallmarks of discussions over the S-300 system bound for Iran. The latest model in the family of systems, the S-300PMU2 Favorit, has a 200 km range that can engage targets flying at altitudes from 5,000 to 27,000 m at speeds of up to 10,000 km/h. It is considered to have comparable capabilities to the Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3) system.
