A UK-run operational conversion unit (OCU) has been stood up at Creech Air Force Base (AFB) in Nevada to qualify UK aircrew to operate the General Atomics MQ-9 Predator B (Reaper) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Wing Commander Andy Jeffrey, the commanding officer of the UK's sole Reaper unit, told Jane's that the first two-person crew, made up of a pilot and sensor operator, successfully passed out from the UK OCU in mid-March. According to Wing Cdr Jeffrey, the continuing drive to train more Reaper-qualified personnel is aimed at building the strength of 39 Squadron beyond its current 12 aircrews to allow MQ-9 combat air patrol missions over Afghanistan on a daily basis. The available manpower dictates the time RAF crews can maintain Reapers on station over Afghanistan, with 10 to 12 hours being the current average mission length, said Wing Cdr Jeffrey. The standing up of the UK OCU within 39 Squadron - the RAF's sole UAV unit - was necessary because the US Air Firce (US AF) was in the process of relocating its UAV training effort from Creech to Hollman AFB in New Mexico. Previously UK aircrew had been trained within the US training organisation.
