US President Barack Obama unveiled a much anticipated US strategy for Afghanistan on 27 March that Includes more troops, more aid money for the region and no withdrawal dates. To deal with a situation that Obama said is becoming "increasingly perilous", the president will send 4,000 extra troops intended to train and build up the Afghan army and police force. These troops will be deployed "this spring" and come in addition to the February authorisation of 17,000 more US troops on top of the 38,000 already in Afghanistan. With the added training and support, officials hope by 2011 to grow the Afghan army's ranks to 134,000 and the police force to 82,000. Obama noted that the additional troops will be complemented by "a dramatic increase in our civilian effort" to bolster development and reconstruction efforts. The US strategy is intended to 'disrupt, dismantle and defeat' Taliban and Al-Qaeda safe havens in Pakistan and Afghanistan and ensure they are not rebuilt.
