Potential contractors for the UK's Future Rapid Effect System Support Vehicle (FRES - SV) have been asked to register expressions of Interest by the end of April, with one contractor set to win a deal for up to 1,300 tracked vehicles. This is expected to be followed by an invitation to tender (ITT) In early September, with a return date of early March 2010. Frontrunners are considered to be the BAE Systems Global Combat Systems Hagglunds CV90 and General Dynamics Santa Barbara Sistemas ASCOD 2 tracked vehicles. The German PSM Puma is also a possibility. Only FRES - SV procurement options are being studied at present, but this could be extended to take in through-life support. Until late 2008 the highest requirement was for the FRES - Utility Vehicle (FRES - UV), with up to 2,200 vehicles expected to be procured. The General Dynamics UK Piranha V (8x8) vehicle was selected as the preferred bidder, but this status was subsequently withdrawn. White there is still a longer-term requirement for the FRES - UV, the UK has recently invested considerable funds in protected patrol vehicles in various models, reducing the urgency of this element.
