Thai and Cambodian forces clashed on 3 April as a nine-month standoff over a disputed temple on the countries' border turned violent for a second time.rnThree Thai soldiers were reported to have died in the incident - although the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok initially denied that there had been any casualties. Several troops from both sides were killed or injured in a previous skirmish in October 2008.rnThe short battle appeared to have been sparked when a Thai soldier stepped on a landmine while patrolling an area - which both countries claim to be within their territory - 2 km from the Preah Vihear temple. A Cambodian patrol later arrived at the scene to investigate, causing the two sides to come into contact. Both armies accused the other of shooting first.
