When Des Ashton took over as New Zealand's Deputy Secretary of Defence (Acquisition) in October 2008, he entered a ministry in the midst of tightening procurement processes.rnThis followed a critical review of the acquisition and introduction into service of HMNZSrnCanterbury, part of the NZD500 million (USD311 million) Project Protector, which also included two offshorernpatrol vessels (OPVs) and four inshore patrol vessels (IPVs).
