The Brazilian Army has launched an initiative to modernise and upgrade the service from 2009 to 2030 under the National Defence Strategy approved in December 2008 and is planning to spend around BRL149 billion (USD74 billion) to upgrade its capabilities.rnThe strategy, called Braco Forte (Strong Arm), covers two major projects, 'Articulacao' and 'Equipa-mento', each with two programmes: Amazonia Protegida and Sentinela da Patria for the first project and Mobilidade Estrategica and Com-batente Brasileiro (COBRA) for the second.
