Transferring responsibility tor security in Afghanistan to the country's domestic forces and shoring up relations with Russia have been outlined as NATO's main priorities by the alliance's new political leader.rn"I believe that during my term the Afghans must take over lead responsibility for their own security. NATO will be there to provide support and we will support the Afghan people for as long as it takes, but supporting them means helping them stand on their own feet," Secretary General Anders Fogh Ras-mussen told reporters in Brussels on 3 August: his first day in his new position.
