The dangers of protecting extended supply lines, concerns of an over-reliance on foreign oil and the urgency of tackling climate change have prompted the world's militaries to rethink their fuels and equipment. Gerrard Cowan reports.rnThe UK lost thousands of camels on the advance to Kandahar during the Second Afghan War in 1878-80, with a favoured enemy tactic being the intimidation and murder of local grass cutters who provided the fodder on which the supply-carrying animals survived.
