The Philippines Defence Secretary, Gilberto Teodoro, has said that Manila aims to eliminate the rebel Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) by the end of this year.rnSpeaking to reporters on 19 August, a week after the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) launched a major offensive against the ASG on the southern island of Basilan, Teodoro said the administration was "driven to finish the [ASG] problem once and for all" ahead of the run-up to the Philippines' presidential election in 2010.rnTwenty-three troops were killed in the Basilan operation on 12 August, with the AFP claiming that 31 rebels had also died.
