Attacks in southern Iraq are decreasing but insurgent forces are adjusting to the new posture of US personnel there by altering tactics to include more rockets fired on fixed positions, a senior US commander in Iraq has said. The southern area - which includes nine provinces and more than 10 million citizens - averages "a little over 1.3 attacks per day", Major General Richard Nash, commander of Multinational Division-South (MND-S), told reporters during an 8 September teleconference from Iraq. This represents arndecline of one third to one quarter compared with the number of daily attacks that occurred when Gen Nash took command in May.
