US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced on 16 September that he would return acquisition authority for the KC-X tanker contract to the US Air Force (USAF) during a speech at an Air Force Association conference in Washington.rn"Source selection is returning to the air force for the KC-X refuelling tanker, with a draft request for proposals [RfP] to follow," Gates said. However, he also promised that his office would "retain a robust oversight role".
