The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is to upgrade its fleet of Westland/Aerospatiale (Eurocopter) SA 330E Puma HC.1 medium-lift transport helicopters in a life-extension programme (LEP) worth GBP300 million (USD478.5 million), it announced on 29 September.rnThe upgrade, the contract for which was signed on 18 September, will enable the Puma to operate in the hot and high' conditions of Afghanistan. It includes GBP220 million to re-equip the 28 aircraft in the Royal Air Force's (RAF's) inventory for an additional 10 years of service, GBP45 million for new engines and GBP35 million in support contracts.
