Germany's Diehl BGT Defence successfully carried out the first flight of its IRIS-T SL (surface launched) medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) on 9 October, according to the company.rnThe ballistic flight-test was conducted in South Africa at Denel's Overberg test range near Cape Town. The company said the test demonstrated a safe launch from the launcher vehicle; the "flight-mechanical and aerodynamic characteristics" of the actual missile; the "operational performance of the newly developed rocket motor"; and the "controlled opening of the aerodynamic shroud".
