Egypt is building an underground wall to thwart the smuggling operations of Hamas militants through a warren of tunnels into the Gaza Strip, security sources acknowledged on 10 December.rnThe wall is claimed to be built of impenetrable steel and is expected to run 30 m underground along the 10 km border known as the Philadelphi route. The cost of the 30 cm-thick wall has been estimated at more than USD1 million.rnWitnesses said they had seen tree cutting and clearing on the Egyptian side for weeks, but it was not until Al-Jazeerarnbroadcast images of earth-moving machines paving and digging along the border that the intention of the works was revealed.rnOne senior Israel Defence Force (IDF) official praised the Egyptian action, telling Jane's on 11 December that it marked a "significant shift in [Egypt's] fight against Hamas; it shows that they, too, are feeling the threat of a Hamas armed with Iranian rockets".
