Military-owned and -managed defence industries in Vietnam will be transferred to the state within five years under a list of reforms proposed by the Vietnamese Ministry of Defence (MoD) in mid-December 2007. Speaking in the Standing Committee of Vietnam's Legislative National Assembly on 19 December, Defence Minister Phung Quang Thanh said that the management of the companies - which total around 140 small-scale firms - will be handed over to the government by 2012.
