India is to begin series production of Akash - its indigenously designed, but long-delayed, medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) - following 10 days of user trials last month at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) on the eastern seaboard. With a 25 km strike range, the 5.78 m-long, solid-fuelled Akash weighs around 700 kg and is part of the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation's plan to build a missile defence shield.
