The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) has commissioned the first of three KSS-2 (Type 214) submarines in a closed ceremony at Chinhae naval base. The 1,860-ton Sohn Won-II, which was launched in June 2006, completed sea trials and accepiance tests over the past 18 months. Construction took place at Hyundai Heavy Industries' Ulsan yard, under licence from ThyssenKrupp subsidiary Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW), which provided the design and major components.
